There are a number of road warnings in place across the central and lower North Island as a cold blast moves north.
Motorists are advised to take extra care throughout Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, Manawatu, Wairarapa and Wellington.
Snow is forecast down to 200 to 300 metres as bitterly cold, strong southerlies are expected to strengthen and spread north .
Oliver Druce from MetService says the majority of the South Island has already been hit by the cold snap.
He says the chilly weather is moving up the country.
It's now hitting Wellington and is expected to cover most of the North Island throughout the day.
Druce says road closures can be expected due to snow and foggy conditions.
Heavy snow warnings are in force for most centres south of Taupo.
Mt Hutt ski-field has been closed for the day due to gale force winds and poor visibility. Five to ten centimetres of snow fell there overnight.
