South Island farmers are being warned to move livestock to lower ground to avoid the coming cold blast.

Both Metservice and Canterbury forecaster Blue Skies are predicting a cold front to move over the region on Tuesday and Wednesday bringing heavy downpours, plenty of snow and cold southwesterlies.

Metservice special weather advisor Andy Downs is warning farmers to protect their stock by moving them to lower ground or sheltered areas.

Good for the ski fields

Ski fields around Canterbury are expected to get another welcome dumping of snow over the next few days.

Up to 10 centimetres of snow is expected to fall above 400 metres.
