A blast of cold and wet weather is heading in, bringing some very heavy rain to the South Island.

Fiordland and the ranges of southern Westland are expected to get a drenching, and there will be northwest gales from Southland to Canterbury.

Forecasters say there will be 70 to 90 millimetres of rain in the next nine to 12 hours.

The cold front will continue sweeping across the South Island overnight Saturday or on Sunday morning.

By Sunday afternoon there will be severe northwest gales in parts of Wellington and exposed areas of Wairarapa.

Forecasters say there is a potential for damage to trees, power lines and roofs.

Gusts of 120 kilometres an hour are likely.
