The country's largest fleet of taxis will be beefing up security in their cars, regardless of any government initiatives.

Auckland's Co-op Taxis are taking the security measures following the killing of their driver Hiren Mohini early on Sunday morning.

"Our members will have the choice either to put the screens, camera or flack jacket, that will be their choice. However if the Minister says to fit screens we'll do that, we're not going to argue with that," says Ian Graham, Co-op Taxi chairman.

The company will foot the bill but is not ruling out passing these costs on to customers.

The company says it is also changing the way it handles emergency responses and is installing a ring-on-arrival system in all cars, in order to give drivers increased security.

The Taxi Federation meets Transport Minister Steven Joyce next week to discuss security issues.

Meanwhile, the police inquiry into Mohini's death, now boosted to 40 officers, continues.
