A climber has been killed after falling in Fiordland.

The man slipped on a ridge on the Homer Saddle, near Milford Sound, and fell around 800 metres.

Emergency services were alerted by his two climbing companions, but attempts to recover his body have so far been hampered by poor weather.

Another attempt will be made in the morning.

Police are waiting until his family has been told before releasing his name.
