The clean-up has resumed in the eastern suburbs of Christchurch
after miserable weather caused some major setbacks yesterday.
The Farmy Army volunteers were stood down yesterday, but some
people still braved the rain, wind and cold to make another dent in
the mess from liquefaction caused by the aftershocks over a week
ago.
The weather is now looking promising for the days ahead and
Federated Farmers is calling for volunteers to join the clean up
effort.
A call to arms has been issued today, with the Farmy Army asking
anyone with even a few hours to spare to come along and help.
Federated Farmers spokesman David Broome says it is not glamorous
work, but it is invaluable in helping lift the spirits of those
down-heartened at having to face yet another hard-slog of a clean
up.
Broome says they have plenty of shovels, but if you can bring
your own it will free up another for someone else.
John Hartnell, also from Federated Farmers, hopes to have all the
silt cleared onto the streets by Friday.
He says they will need about 400 volunteers a day to achieve this
goal. Volunteers are still asked to meet at the AMP Showgrounds on
Curletts Road.
The Farmy Army and Student Volunteer Army will be focusing on the
Parklands area as well as other affected eastern suburbs.
