The Presbyterian Church says modern Christmas has succumbed to consumerism.
The head of the church is sending a message out to families to remember the religious story behind the holiday period.
"Over a number of years, people have felt uneasy about the extent to which Christmas has simply become a shopping spree, the pressure to buy gifts," says Graham Redding.
"Often people feeling they have been pressured beyond their means."
Crowds of people were expected to attended midnight masses on Christmas Eve, including more than 1,000 people in one of the biggest services of the year at St Paul's Cathedral in Wellington.
