The demolition of the earthquake-damaged BNZ building in Christchurch, which began this week, will involve the use of a special high-reach machine that was purposely built to demolish London's Wembley Stadium.
The machine, dubbed "Goliath", has been brought to Christchurch by McGee, which is one of the companies working on the BNZ demolition in Cathedral Square with Hawkins, and March Construction.
The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority says Goliath, which has a reach of 35 metres and weighs 130 tonnes, will arrive on site to start its work on the BNZ in the coming weeks.
The BNZ demolition will take until July 9 to complete and its progress will be able to be seen by the general public from the CBD end of the Restart Mall, Cera said today.
The job will be a combination of cut and craning, and the use of the high-reach demolition machine, the authority said.
