Christchurch's CBD red zone has been reduced.
The latest reduction on the eastern side opens up Latimer Square
which was used as a triage centre after the February 22
earthquake.
The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority says the reduction is
the first of a series of gradual reductions that are anticipated in
the week before Christmas and continuing in the New Year.
CERA General Manager Operations, Warwick Isaacs, says it "won't be perfect" when people return to the CBD.
But he says CERA, the Christchurch City Council, power company Orion and Telecom are all working together so that as many of the basics as possible are ready each time the cordon is reduced.
"Planning for further demolition work needs to be coordinated with the temporary replacement or repair of infrastructure."
CERA says there will be ongoing work at the edges of the red zone for many months.
