A new hotel on the Christchurch City skyline claims to be the tallest building in the South Island.
Standing at 22 storeys, the Marque Hotel is 86 metres above the street. But the hotel company admits it is the spire - 13 metres of steel - that entitles it to take the tallest title.
And the hotel's vital statistics don't really measure up when compared to Wellington and Auckland's tallest buildings.
The tallest building in the capital is the Majestic Centre at 116 metres high while the tallest building in Auckland is currently the Vero Centre which rises 175 metres.
These in turn are dwarfed by Auckland's Sky Tower which at a lofty 328 metres is the tallest man-made structure in New Zealand.
