A 10 year-old boy has died after a car crashed into a pond on the West Coast this evening.

Emergency services were alerted to the crash at a gold mine site on Adair Road, about 7 kilometres south of Hokitika, after a four-wheel drive came off the road and rolled into a pond.

An eight year-old girl was rescued alive from the vehicle after spending more than two hours submerged before police and firefighters could get to her.

The male driver of the vehicle escaped the car and ran several kilometres to raise the alarm around 7pm.

The female child was transported to Grey Base hospital suffering hypothermia and is reported to be doing well.

Police are not looking for any other victims from the crash and an investigation into the incident will resume tomorrow.
