NZ officials say just over 100 Kiwis are still unaccounted for in Samoa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is looking for just over 100 New Zealanders in Samoa, but believes many of them may have left the island after the tsunami.

So far, four New Zealanders have been confirmed, two adults and two young children. One other New Zealander (a young child) is missing, presumed dead.

Grave fears are also held for two other New Zealanders who were known to be staying at the Taufua Resort, Lalomanu at the time of the tsunami.

The ministry and the New Zealand High Commission in Apia is in contact with the families and is providing assistance.

So far, 14 injured New Zealanders, and six accompanying family member have been evacuated to New Zealand on a RNZAF plane.

The High Commission in Apia is continuing to contact New Zealanders in Samoa and to check on their well-being.

The Ministry has also downgraded the travelling risk to Samoa from "high risk" to "some risk".

It is asking people to let them know if they have heard from friends or family members in Samoa on  0800 432 111.
