The five refuse centres in Christchurch are struggling to cope with piles of debris following Saturday's quake.
It has led to an old dumpsite near Kaiapoi being re-opened to deal with truckloads of silt and refuse from the city and its surrounds.
With the clean-up all over Canterbury in full swing, nearly every four minutes, trucks laden with contaminated food waste from supermarket storage centres, along with all the quake rubble, arrive at the refuse sites.
Along with the lack of space to dump the rubbish, there is now a shortage of drivers to bring in all the waste.
Some companies are flying in drivers from Australia to help, with heavy machinery operators working at full force, along with old-fashioned manual workers.
Councils have asked residents to collect all the potentially contaminated silt from their properties and bring it out onto the road about a metre from the kerbside where trucks can collect it and take it to the dump.
