The Christchurch City Mission has been flooded with donations of food after a desperate public plea.

City Missioner Michael Gorman says while he was anxious earlier in the week about feeding the 700 mouths expected on Friday, he now has no worries.

All except for one or two things, such as tinned fruit salad, soft drinks and fresh berries the day before Christmas.

He says preparations for Friday's Christmas lunch begin at 8am Thursday morning when the Crusaders put up the lunch marquee at Christchurch East School.

Meanwhile, the Salvation Army says the generosity shown by two Wellington businesses has helped restore its faith.

The Sallies' Kilbirnie shop was burgled on Sunday with two offenders taking off with the safe containing $900.

BP has since donated $1,000 in New World food vouchers to the Salvation Army to cover the loss, and Full Stop printing has also given a monetary donation.

Major Peter Christianson says the generosity has restored their motivation in helping the needy.
