Charges are expected to be laid this week over the slaughter of more than 30 dogs in what police described as a "frenzied attack."

The dogs were shot on Rowan Hargreaves' property at Wellsford, north of Auckland following a reported dispute with a neighbour Russell Mendoza who believed one of the dogs killed his fox terrier Otis.

The charges are expected to be laid following an investigation by the SPCA.

Last month Auckland SPCA executive director Bob Kerridge says it was "absolutely clear" several of the animals suffered.
