The chance of another big quake in Christchurch has dropped by 20%, one expert says.
GNS Science spokesman Kelvin Berryman says there's a mere one percent chance of another magnitude seven quake or larger in Canterbury over the next year.
Berryman released new projections to a CERA briefing today.
He said the forecast probability of damaging quakes during and following the rebuild period is reduced compared to estimates released late last year.
Upsetting thefts
Meanwhile, CERA boss Roger Sutton says he is disappointed that property has been stolen from the Bexley houses currently being cleared.
Sutton says CERA has been working closely with police and the Fire Service to keep an eye on security in the suburbs but "there are people out there who will take advantage of the smallest window of opportunity to rip someone else off".
"Ultimately, they are ripping off each and every one of us as these are homes that have been purchased through the Government buy out."
Police are investigating.
