New caution is being urged for skiers after Canterbury's Mt Hutt skifield claimed its third life in a month.

The warning follows the latest death when a Christchurch woman was fatally injured after falling several hundred metres just outside the skifield boundary.

The 56-year-old mother was seriously injured after falling 700 metres over rocks and ice. She was taken to Christchurch Hospital but died.

Her death comes only a month after a 21-year-old American died in a 100-metre fall.

A 60-year-old man was the first to die at the skifield this season when his car slipped off the Mt Hutt access road.
