A Bay of Plenty cat's bizarre behaviour and fire alarm noises alerted its owner to a house fire.

Julie Woodhouse had been having a bath in her Tauranga home on Devonport Rd about 8.45pm on Tuesday when her cat Farley came into the bathroom.

He was making noises like a fire alarm and his odd behaviour prompted her to investigate, the Bay of Plenty Times reported.

She found a blaze making its way from the garage, through the bedrooms, bathroom and hallway and screamed to alert her 17-year-old daughter Laura.

Their property was badly damaged by the fire believed to have started in Woodhouse's car, with only a few remains in the other end of the house salvageable.

Farley disappeared after the fire, but returned last night, sooty and hungry.

Woodhouse was not insured and their local church had started a fund to help the pair.
