The man accused of murdering a Christchurch cat welfare worker has been committed for trial.

Ashley Peach allegedly strangled Kerry Downey in August last year.

The 52-year-old had gone to rescue a stray cat from a Riccarton address when she disappeared. Her body was found two days later on rural land in the Port Hills.

Prosecutor Anna MacGougan on Monday detailed the evidence the Crown says ties 41-year-old Peach to the woman's death.

That included evidence from two men, who were in a flat above Peach's address in in Riccarton Road, of hearing a woman's scream.

The contents of Peach's two police statements have been suppressed.

Peach, 41, will remain in custody until a pre-trial hearing in March.
