Police are urging people to take care on the roads this Christmas following a fatal car crash near Towai in Northland.

Two European tourists in their thirties were killed when their campervan collided with a truck on State Highway One shortly before 11am Tuesday.

The driver of the truck was not injured and a woman and child in another vehicle, which crashed into the pile up, suffered moderate injuries.

Police are still investigating the cause.

State Highway One at Towai reopened mid-afternoon after being closed while emergency services dealt with the accident.

The official Christmas road toll period starts on Thursday.
