A day when Cantabrians are usually basking in sunshine and enjoying time off has been spoilt by a southerly whipping.

The chilly blast is keeping crowds away from the biggest day at the Royal A&P Show.

Some stall owners were doing all they could to keep everything on the ground.

Normally up to 60,000 pack out the final day of the show - but not this year.

"We really need that town audience on the Friday and that's what really makes the Canterbury show," says show director Roe Finlay.

Most people huddled inside out of the weather which means it has been a great day for retailers who had indoor stalls.

Elsewhere in Christchurch gusts of up to 90 kilometres an hour brought down trees and power lines, blocking major suburban streets. As the southerly arrived the temperature plummeted six degrees in just one hour.
