A pro-cannabis protest outside the Waitakere District Court went up in smoke.

A group supporting the legalisation of cannabis were smoking marijuana in public on Wednesday morning as part of a protest against current possession laws.

But the brazen display was over when police intervened and searched the protesters' bus.

"I can't believe they found cannabis on the Cannabus. Nothing to do with me," protester Dakte Green told police at the scene.

He was told he was under arrest for the possession of cannabis.

"Oh, you're kidding me," Green replied.

"No I'm not," the officer responded.

The man was taken to the Waitakere police station for processing.
