Cannabis plants seized in domestic dispute call

Published: 12:38PM Thursday September 13, 2012 Source: Fairfax

Police have seized 53 cannabis plants and five harvested stem heads from a home at Waikanae Beach north of Wellington, after attending a domestic dispute.

Detective Sergeant James McKay said police were called to the house on Tuesday morning due to a domestic dispute between a 28-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man.

While there officers could smell cannabis and saw a light on in a garage. They searched the property, and found a growing operation in the garage.

''They were called in relation to another matter, and have come across the smell,'' McKay said.

''In that situation, under the Misuse of Drugs Act we can perform an emergency search and that turned up 53 cannabis plants and five heads.''

A 34-year-old man was arrested and charged with cultivating cannabis, and appeared in Porirua District Court on Tuesday. He will reappear on September 25.

McKay said it was a surprising find.

''To go there on a completely different matter and make a discovery like that is great.''

The cannabis will be destroyed.
