Calm seas allow further search for missing trio

Published: 3:30PM Saturday August 18, 2012 Source: ONE News/ Newstalk ZB

Calm sea conditions have today allowed teams to continue searching for the three climbers missing off the coast of New Plymouth.

Instructor Bryce Jourdain, along with Spotswood College students Stephen Lewis Kahukaka-Gedye and Joao Felipe Martins De Melo, both 17, are presumed drowned after falling into the Tasman Sea off Paritutu rock on August 8.

Rough seas have previously hampered search efforts with aerial, sea and land searches failing to recover the bodies.

Senior Constable Jeff McGrath said three divers had been waiting for suitable sea conditions to allow them to search at the base of Paritutu because it was an area of interest.

Dive teams are being helped by the Department of Conservation and Taranaki Lifesaving.
