An prisoner support organisation wants more specialist mental health help for inmates.

Convicted murderer George Baker took an 83-year-old inmate hostage on Friday night at Paremoremo Prison.

Baker's lawyer says his mental health needs are not being met in prison and the Prison Fellowship agrees.

National Director Robin Gunston says it is restricted in what it can achieve.

He says there are very few specialists in certain areas and it can take some time for prisoners to be seen in the mental health system.
