Auckland health officials want a city-wide smoking ban in outdoor public places.
The move is designed to stop children picking up the habit.
Andy Roche and Dr Lavinia Perumal of Auckland Regional Public Health Service are spearheading the proposal.
And it is being backed by all three district health boards.
They also want the council to consider banning smoking in Auckland's CBD and other town centres.
The proposal states they are disappointed there is no commitment to having smoke-free public spaces in the Council's Draft Plan.
They say the ban would protect children from second-hand smoke
and ultimately prevent the uptake of smoking among young
people.
