Budgeting Services is calling for the government to put price controls on basic food.
The call comes in response to Statistics New Zealand figures showing food cost 8.8% in the three months to March compared to the same period last year.
The overall cost of living rose 3% with food making up more than half the increase.
Budgeting Services chief executive Raewyn Fox says the organisation would like to see price controls put on dairy products and bread. She says they are the things that families rely on to feed their children.
Budgeting Services is encouraging people to look at the big picture when it comes to finances. Fox says people need to see if there is room for movement anywhere.
She is advising people to have a chat to their creditors, particularly about their mortgage.
