Freedom campers who travel the country in sleeper vans without self-contained toilets and utilities should be "shot", the Motor Caravan Association's (NZMCA) president says.
NZMCA president Dick Waters says the association's members did not want to be "lumped in" with freedom campers, who often dumped rubbish and used bushes as toilets, the Southland Times reported.
He said tourists in "whiz-bang" backpacker sleeper or rental vans should be banned and the drivers should be shot.
The Otago Conservation Board last week called for a ban on campervans and freedom parking in the region, while Southern Lakes district tourism operators last month called for stricter rules for freedom campers.
The issue would be discussed at an NZMCA gathering in Lawrence in Otago this weekend.
