The 19-year-old who drowned in the Rangitikei River near Bulls on Tuesday has been named as Steven Tuanau.

The Bulls resident had been floating down the river with a small rubber tube about 3.25pm when it appeared he was caught on a submerged log about 6m from shore, police say.

Two female friends and an 11-year-old girl were on the river with him.

"They went to help him along with another group of people who were by the river," police spokeswoman Kim Perks said on Tuesday.

"Although they managed to free him from the log, attempts to revive him were unsuccessful."
