An Auckland builder has described an argument he had with MP Taito Philip Field while he was working on his property in Samoa.
A depositions hearing is underway at the Manukau District Court to decide whether Field will stand trial on charges of bribery and attempting to pervert justice.
The Mangere MP is facing 40 charges of bribery and attempting to pervert the cause of justice for allegedly helping Thai nationals with immigration in exchange for renovation work.
During the hearing on Monday Thai tiler Sunan Siriwan said he travelled to Samoa along with builder Keith Williams for the tiling job.
"Keith Williams said to me Mr Taito is a mature person, he is
respectful person and he works for government so he could do things
like that to help me," he said.
On Wednesday, Williams told the court he went to Samoa with Siriwan
to work on Field's property in March 2005.
On Wednesday, Williams said while he was in Samoa he confronted Field about the lack of money Siriwan was receiving for food and other expenses, but when he did Field started ranting and told him he could hire Samoan people to do the work instead.
The hearing is expected to end on Friday.
