A New Zealand man has sharply criticised Brazilian police who he says delayed for weeks the arrest of a suspect in his three-year-old daughter's rape and murder.
Karl Paroli recently moved to Brazil with his Brazilian partner.
His daughter Cloe was killed last December and it took until last week for police to catch the suspected murderer, a labourer.
Paroli has accused the head of the local military police of blocking attempts to have the crime investigated.
He says other officers, notably the head of the regional tourist police and Sao Paulo detectives cracked the case in a matter of days once they took it up.
Paroli said he had been pressured to keep quiet about the rape and murder, but the case made headlines in Brazil this week after the couple decided to come forward to explain their struggle for justice.
A 24-year-old man has since confessed to raping and drowning the girl.
The New Zealand embassy has confirmed it had stepped in to liaise with police.
