Police are talking to a 14-year-old boy after he took a heavy goods truck on a 140km joyride.

Police said the boy took a Western Star truck from his father's work in Christchurch around midday yesterday.

The teen then drove to Timaru where he stopped and visited his mother before driving to Makikihi to visit his grandparents.

The boy's father had reported that his car, which he had bought just days earlier, was missing yesterday afternoon, the NZ Herald said.

The boy was on his way back to Christchurch when police pulled him over in Timaru at around 6.30pm.

Another 14-year-old boy was found riding in the passenger seat when the car was pulled over.

In March an 8-year-old boy was caught driving his parents' SUV in central Wellington.

TVNZ reporter Lucas de Jong saw the motorist swerving along the road and blocked the vehicle into a car park outside the Novotel Hotel and called police.

The tearful 8-year-old climbed out, still wearing his pyjamas.

He told police he could not sleep and wanted to go and see his friends.
