The government is close to revealing its proposed laws for cracking down on boy racers.

Prime Minister John Key says the issue has been discussed by Cabinet and two separate bills, one in the name of the Minister of Transport and the other in the name of the Minister of Police, will come before parliament soon.

Key says the proposal to crush offenders' cars is included but it will be used as a measure of last resort and offenders would have to break the law more than once before it's used.

He says the legislation is reasonably wide-ranging and he believes it will cut to the heart of the problem.
