A man has drowned at Te Puna Beach in Tauranga Harbour.
Police were notified at about 4.30pm that the 53-year-old had not returned from the water.
The Tauranga man was with his family at a beach gathering pipi when two of his children started to have difficulties. Police said the man went to their aid and managed to turn the children towards the shore.
When another family member went to help the children the man had vanished from sight.
An extensive search of the inner harbour, using boats, shoreline personnel and helicopters, was carried out and the man's body was spotted by helicopter in the harbour.
He was recovered by boat shortly afterwards.
