Body found in Wellington

Wellington police are investigating after the body of an elderly woman was found on rocks near Scorching Bay.

The body was found by a member of the public shortly before 2pm this afternoon.

Police divers have carried out a search around the area.

"At this stage we are treating this death as unexplained until a post mortem examination is carried out tomorrow," said Detective Inspector Paul Basham from the Wellington CIB.

The body has yet to be formally identified.

Police have not released any further details.
