Tauranga police have confirmed that the body of a middle-aged man was found at 7am Tuesday morning at a private address in the suburb of Gate Pa.
A team of 25 police are investigating, and are on site.
At this stage they are unable to confirm the cause of death but say it is suspicious.
Detective senior sergeant Greg Turner say the body was discovered by a visitor who went to the address.
He says they aren't 100% sure of the man's identity and he wouldn't comment on whether there were any signs of physical injury.
"Until the post-mortem is complete, we are unable to determine the cause of death, however, we are certainly considering it a suspicious death at this time," says Turner.
Turner says initial police inquiries indicate that neighbours heard a disturbance at the Watling St address late on Monday night, and they are keen to hear from anyone who may have heard or seen anything in that street overnight.
The body will be transported to Auckland later on Tuesday for a post mortem examination.
Police expect to release more information later on Tuesday.
