Police believe they know the identity of a man who was found in a burning car in Horowhenua.
Police received reports of smoke coming from Waitarere Beach Forest, about 15km northwest of Levin, around 7.20am today. A car was discovered on fire on a track in the forest, with the body inside.
Police said it was too early to say if the death was suspicious
and they were treating the death as "unexplained".
A post mortem and formal identification process have to be
completed before details of the man's identity can be released.
Police said this may take "some days".
Anyone with information should contact Levin police.
Another body was found in a burning car near Rotorua in the weekend.
Police said today the body was so badly burnt forensic tests could not establish whether it is male or female, and they were awaiting DNA tests.
