The bodies of two men found dead in a cave in an isolated part of the Coromandel Peninsula have been recovered, police have confirmed.

Police are saying very little about the discovery, but ONE News has learned that the bodies were found in an abandoned mine shaft off the 309 Road near Whitianga.

The site, down a track through dense bush, can not be seen from the road. It was cordoned off while police continued their investigation.

ONE News understands that several items have been removed by police from the scene, including gas bottles, generators and what appeared to be several different chemicals.

Police have not released the men's ages and their names will not be released until their families have been contacted.

The police said port mortems are to be carried out in Auckland on Monday.
