Michelle Boag has been forced to stand aside from her recruitment position in relation to Auckland's supercity.

The National party stalwart had copped flak for her involvement, given her friendship and advisory role to mayoral candidate John Banks.

Political opponents claimed there was a conflict of interest.

Boag has now passed on her responsibilities to a colleague.

But the Auckland Transition Agency is standing by its decision to hire her recruitment company. Momentum.

Executive chairman Mark Ford says the political criticism has been an unnecessary distraction.
