Binney painting sells for $270,000 to aid Christchurch

A Don Binney masterpiece has sold at auction for $270,000 in aid of the Christchurch earthquake recovery fund.

Historian and author Dick Scott bought Kotare Over Ratana Church, Te Kao in the early 1960s for 50 guineas. The dealer took copies of Scott's recently published book on wine as part payment.

But after owning the painting for more than 50 years, Scott let it go tonight when it was sold at auction at Webb's in Newmarket, Auckland for $20,000 more than expected.

It was unclear tonight who had bought the painting which is regarded as a pivotal work in the emergence of contemporary New Zealand painting in the 1960s.
