Police are stepping up their search for the killer of Auckland
taxi driver Hiren Mohini, launching a billboard campaign in the
central city.
Mohini, a 39-year-old Auckland Co-Op driver and father of two, died
after being attacked by a passenger in a frenzied knife attack
earlier this month.
The passenger ran off but police believe a vital clue was a blood stained bag found near the death scene and security camera footage of a man in Queen Street. A distinctive cap was also found at the scene of the murder.
A billboard is to be installed on Fort Street in downtown Auckland appealing to passersby for information about the identity of the man. The six-by-three metre billboard in features a CCTV image of a man police want to speak to, as well as pictures of the blue bag and dark cap found near the scene of the stabbing.
The billboard space was vacant and its location ties in nicely with the fact we're appealing to Asian communities in the inner city to help us solve this mystery," says Detective Senior Sergeant Hywel Jones.
"We're trying a range of methods to appeal to the public for information."
Police are also releasing a set of DVDs with information that can be played on in-house advertising screens in inner city retail stores.
Hywel Jones says there are a number of backpacker hostels around Fort Street and plenty of people moving around, so the billboard is a way to maximise opportunities for information.
The move comes on the same day taxi industry representatives converged on parliament lobbying for safety changes to be made mandatory.
