Thousands of bikers are expected to roar into Wellington on Tuesday to protest a proposed hike in ACC levies, prompting police to warn of disruption on the capital's roads.

Police say they are expecting the motorcyclists from around the country to travel in convoy from Porirua and Lower Hutt into Wellington, causing congestion on  State Highways 1 and 2 late in the morning.

"Given that approximately 3,500 rider protesters are expected to converge on Wellington, it is hoped that the ride and peaceful protest will have as minimal impact as possible on the CBD," district road policing manager Inspector Peter Baird, says.

"Through working with community partners including Wellington City Council and Westpac Stadium, parking has been secured at the Westpac Stadium on Aotea Quay for the motorcyclists," he says.

The motorcyclists will join organised convoys from Porirua or Lower Hutt and will be escorted by police patrol vehicles.

"The volume of protesters does have both disruption and safety risks that the organisers have been at pains to minimise, while still ensuring a maximum assembly," Baird says.

The traffic delays are expected from 11.30am to 1.30pm, he says.

Several regional protest rallies were held around the country at the weekend.

Bikers wore signs declaring themselves "easy targets" for proposed ACC changes, while suggesting others may be picked off later.

Under the new scheme, the cost of registering a moped would rise $58.97 to $257.58.

All motorcycles currently cost $252.69 but from 2010/11 those 125cc-600cc will rise to $511.43 while those over 600cc will be $745.77.
