A Crown lawyer's attempt to appeal against the name suppression of an entertainer who committed an indecent act on a 16-year-old girl has been blocked by the Solicitor-General.

The entertainer admitted forcing the teenager's head into his genitals and was discharged without conviction by Judge Eddie Paul in the Auckland District Court earlier in November.

He was also given permanent name suppression.

A senior Crown prosecutor had looked at appealing the suppression order, but the move was blocked by Solicitor-General David Collins, QC, according to the Weekend Herald.

A Crown Law spokeswoman has confirmed an appeal has been discussed but has declined to comment.

The entertainer's identity is widely known and the suppression order has been flouted on the internet.

Prime Minister John Key admitted last week that he knew the entertainer's identity.
