A Maori activist and the head of a gang have agreed to try to help broker a gang truce in the Bay of Plenty township of Murupara.

Two teenagers have been killed there this year and both killings have links to gang violence.

Activist Tame Iti and Tribesman gang leader Peter Hunt have reportedly shown interest to help ease the tension between local gangs.

Murupara community leader Pem Bird says the Tribesman's involvement was a breakthrough. He says this will relieve the tension and anxiety over the threat of retaliation and allows them to focus on a similar result with the Mongrel Mob.

Iti, who was involved in resolving conflicts between gangs in Ruatoki several years ago, has shown his support.
