An 82-year-old German tourist who died at Kaiteriteri beach near Motueka on Monday afternoon has been named as Christel Neuhauser.

Preliminary post-mortem results showed that she drowned but a medical condition was thought to have contributed, Sergeant Rob Crawford, of Motueka, told the Nelson Mail.

Neuhauser was in wading-depth water when she was thought to be in difficulty about 3pm on Monday. Minutes later she was spotted face down in the water, he says.

She was dragged from the sea by a Motueka man, and CPR was performed by an off-duty firefighter from Christchurch and two Australian nurses.
