A teenage couple beaten nearly to death in what police called a "vicious, brutal, random attack", are due out of hospital Monday, facing a long road to recovery.

The 19-year-old man and his 17-year-old girlfriend were found critically hurt near Starling Park in west Auckland eight days ago.

The man was semi-conscious. As he was being treated by paramedics his girlfriend was at a nearby house seeking help.

Both had serious head injuries but were recovering well, police say.

The man will be discharged from hospital to a neurological unit for monitoring, as he was found to have bleeding on the brain. His girlfriend will be sent home after surgery to repair broken bones in her face.

Neither could give police any details of their attacker or what happened.

Detective Sergeant Roger Small says police were hoping their memories would return.

"They just simply cannot remember a damned thing. We hoped as time progressed that may have changed, but it hasn't," Small told NZPA.

"There might be glimmers that come back, but then again there might be nothing at all, but we might get a full recovery. It is a time thing."

Small says police were following several lines of inquiry but "no smoking gun".

There was nothing to suggest the couple had a background that would attract attention from the criminal world.

"They were only kids... It certainly appears to be a vicious, brutal, random attack. There is nothing at all to indicate any motivation."

He says the young couple was probably minding their own business before the attack.

"It is grim that we have got that sort of thing going on in out society."
