Three massive avalanches are blocking a major tourist route in the South Island.
State Highway 94 which runs from Te Anau to Milford Sound has been closed since last Wednesday near the Lower Hollyford turn off due to heavy snowfall.
Contractors are now clearing the area where, over the past few days, thousands of tonnes of snow and ice have fallen across the road, flattening large areas of forest, burying the road and blocking the entrance to the Homer Tunnel.
Contractors expect to work almost around the clock to get this
major tourist road open by the end of the week.
