A post mortem examination on Henderson toddler Aisling Symes shows she drowned.

Aisling's body was found in a drain just metres from the home of the two-year-old's deceased grandparents where her mother was working when the toddler disappeared on Monday last week.

Waitakere Area Police Commander Inspector Gary Davey says he is unable to comment on the specific details of the autopsy but there was no evidence of injury.

The results of the post mortem are consistent with drowning, Davey says.

Aisling's body has been released to her family and her death has been referred to the coroner.

"Aisling's death is devastating for her family and for everyone who knew and loved her. Police, along with other members of the community, are also deeply saddened," says Davey.

Davey says the police team remain in close contact with Aisling's family who have appreciated the many messages and gestures of support and sympathy expressed from the public.

Police expect to complete on Tuesday afternoon a detailed scene examination of the drainpipe where Aisling was found.

Davey has thanked the public for their caring response and support.

He says messages, flowers and other tributes have been arriving at Henderson Police Station throughout the day for the family and for police staff.
