Swimmers are being advised to take care on Auckland's beaches following reports of microscopic jellyfish causing irritating rashes.
The Auckland Health Service says the jellyfish can cause a red, raised, itchy or painful rash, also known as sea bathers eruption, which tends to mainly affect areas that have been covered by a bathing suit or clothes, rather than uncovered areas.
The tiny transparent jellyfish can get caught in clothing and sting when swimmers leave the water.
The sting is described as a tingling sensation at first but after several hours develops into a rash.
"The only guaranteed way to prevent being stung is to avoid bathing at affected beaches," Medical Officer of Health, Dr Simon Baker said.
"We have had reports from Long Bay, Milford and Takapuna beaches, although it is likely that this problem extends all along the Hauraki Gulf".
Auckland Health Service advises people to remove swimwear as soon as possible after they leave the water and take a shower to reduce the chance of being stung.
If a rash does develop it says people should use calamine lotion to soothe the area, and visit a pharmacist if the rash worsens.
