Sometime next week the population of Auckland is expected to surpass 1.5 million, according to Statistics New Zealand.
Population Statistics manager Andrea Blackburn said the country's biggest city is predicted to reach the landmark figure by February 1, the day after Auckland Anniversary Day.
"The 1.5 millionth person could be a migrant coming from overseas or from within New Zealand, but it is most likely to be a new baby," Blackburn said.
"That's because births add more than net migration to Auckland's population growth."
The prediction is based on the average population growth over the last two years, which takes into account births, deaths, arrivals, and departures of residents.
Auckland's population share is 34%, a figure which has doubled since the 1961 census when the city held just 17% of New Zealand's population.
"Auckland has dominated New Zealand's population growth over the last 60 years," said Blackburn.
The city ranks fifth largest across Australia and New Zealand,
following behind Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.
